Freestyle

Godfrey never knew his parents, as they had both died before he was two years old. His Father’s relatives had since perished, so it was up to his Mother’s parents - his grandparents - to take care of him. They were both muggles living in London during the war: his grandfather was stationed somewhere in the Far East with the British army and his grandmother was providing for the war effort in a telephone exchange. Godfrey had barely met them before he was sent away to live in the countryside with another muggle family, who weren’t the most loving of people.

When the war was over, however, Godfrey went back to London to live with his grandparents in peace. They were nice people, extremely poor and struggling with rationed food: Godfrey always remembered feeling hungry in those days before he went to Hogwarts. When he did start attending Hogwarts, Godfrey felt as though that was the first time he had experienced actual flavour. He spent evenings in the great hall experimenting with different combinations of food: some whackier than others.

Then when he got to thirteen and his first Hogsmeade trip, he finally found his place: Honeydukes. He would spend hours there. For months he would save every knut he had to spend there. Amongst all the brightly coloured displays, piles of chocolate and sweets galore: he felt he’d stepped into paradise.

One day when Godfrey was in his fourth year, he’d gone to Honeydukes early and waited outside eagerly for its doors to open. That’s when he saw her for the first time: in her velvet blue coat and matching hat, her hair curled and bouncy and shining. She had gloves on of fine leather, and was clutching at her mouth. He thought that she smiled at him then. Perhaps she hadn’t, but it didn’t make much difference: he was completely in love with her from that moment on.

Despite her numerous rejections, Godfrey always pursued her. He knew that she was conflicted between the expectations of her family and following her heart. When she married, he was heartbroken. But when she arrived at his Hogsmeade cottage several days after the wedding, he was stunned. He became a Father that night, and loved her all over again.

But there was nothing after that: silence, and then... news of his child. At that point he was still clinging onto a false hope that she loved him, and they could raise the child together. When he told her that, though, she laughed cruelly at him.

Why would I ever do that, Godfrey? You’re such a fool.

So he took his child, and he raised him himself. He inherited Honeydukes from the old couple after working under them for years after Hogwarts, and provided well enough for the two of them. His son grew to be a man Godfrey was extremely proud of, but he always wondered what it could have been like if Tobyn had his Mother in the picture. He still dreams about her, still foolishly loves her, although he would never admit it. It’s probably for the best that Tobyn hates her. Probably.
