Freestyle

With his young Father perishing shortly after being enlisted into the war effort, Tobias was taken from Cokeworth, and his young Mother, to an evacuation area in North Wales where he was situated at Cyffylliog until the end of the war, then returned to Cokeworth to Thurston's Orphanage for Fatherless Boys. His Mother had been married to his Father, but hadn't the money or the rights to raise Tobias herself. Tobias had quite a sad, lonely and miserable childhood there. Although his Mother visited him when she could, the gifts she brought were promptly taken away: toys and games were replaced with empty, colourless walls and draughty sleeping quarters.

Tobias left school in his mid-teens and went straight to work at a local factory in Cokeworth that manufactured car parts, and still works there to this day. It's hard labour, long hours and a measly payslip at the end of the month. The only benefit they received was accomodation: a very small, battered Victorian town house built on the side of a foul-smelling river.

He was nineteen years old when he met Eileen. Although she was a quiet, shy kind of girl, her temperament suited Tobias. He liked the girls who would giggle at his silly jokes, listen to him talk, show him tenderness and appreciation that he'd never had in the work place or during his childhood. The pair were married after Eileen fell pregnant, and that was when Tobias learnt all about her family.

Eileen had her inheritance taken away the moment she was married, so Tobias had some questions. When she revealed everything about the Wizard World and her magical lineage, Tobias couldn't accept it. After Severus was born - a name he detested for his son - Tobias began to drink heavily after work. Although he never admitted that it was a comfort blanket to a world where his wife was more powerful than he, Tobias often used the excuse of it dulling the pains and the aches in his body that had accumulated over some years of heavy labour.

Eileen had offered to give him Witch medicine to help the pain, but Tobias had snapped back at her. He didn't want her poisonous potions! From that point on, Tobias would lift his hand to her whenever she ridiculed him like that, and sometimes it was right in front of their infant son. If they were going to stay in his house, they were going to live by his rules.

There was part of Tobias that detested what he had become. He was a drunk, was tempremental, was in a relationship with a woman he couldn't stand and felt a shadow of his former self. A lot of the blame went to his son: if he hadn't been born, then this may never have happened.

But there is part of him that, in earnest, wants to be a good Father. Severus might be one of them, but Tobias always wanted to give his child (whoever he or she turned out to be) what he never had: a living, breathing, Fatherly presence in their lives. In recent years Tobias has made some changes to the way he treats his wife and son, but the unpredictability of his rage manifesting puts everyone on edge. He has a long way to go.
